Title: Known limits, achievability and trends for M2M:
Towards massive, reliable and real-time communications

Abstract: In the ‘beyond 5G’ roadmap, the place taken by machine type communications (M2M) is constantly increasing, strengthening the mutation of the wireless access paradigm. Indeed critical KPIs for M2M communications are focused on reliability, latency (URLLC) and massive access. The latter is required to absorb the exponential increase of connected things, with in some cases strong reliability-latency requirements. From a general perspective, and under fixed resources and massive access, the reliability-latency duality is becoming more and more central. In this talk we review the key questions and we describe few of our recent contributions, allowing to determine fundamental limits with respect to these 3 KPIs. Our approaches exploit information theory, recent coding, decoding and decision strategies. The presentation will span recent results of the Maracas (Inria-Insa) research group,  from theoretical, algorithmic and experimental complementary perspectives.

Biography: Jean-Marie Gorce (Senior Member, IEEE) received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA), Lyon, France, in 1993 and 1998, respectively. He was a Co-Founder of the Centre for Innovation, Telecommunications and Integration of Services (CITI Lab), in 2001. He was a Visiting Scholar with Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, USA, from 2013 to 2014. He has been the Principal Investigator of several French and European sponsored projects related to wireless networks. He is currently the Scientific Coordinator for the Experimental Facility FIT-CorteXlab. He is also a Professor with INSA, Université de Lyon and the Head for Science with INRIA Lyon. He has co-published more than 150 conference and journal articles. His research interests include wireless networking and communication theory, focusing on realistic modeling, wireless system optimization, and performance assessment considering both infrastructure-based and ad-hoc networks.

Resilience as the Master Key for Secure Cyber-Physical Energy Systems

Abstract:

This talk will give an overview of the research of the Secure Next Generation Resilient Systems (SENTRY) lab (sentry.kaust.edu.sa) at KAUST. The transformation of critical grid infrastructures into cyber-physical energy systems contributes towards modernization allowing for better planning, more flexible control, system-wide optimization, etc. However, the cyber-threat landscape on these infrastructures seems to widen with increasing sophistication associated with the use of internet-of-things (IoT) and cloud-based services despite significant benefits in terms of reliability and efficiency. The talk will present different cases of attack strategies simulated under various operating conditions to uncover their system-wide impacts in power systems, as well as illustrate the impact of such attacks and the feasibility of detection methods in simulation models in order to enhance system resilience.

Programmable Testbeds for Experimentation with Advanced Wireless and Edge-computing Concepts

Abstract:
Softwarization and virtualization are two disruptive paradigms that are becoming the basis of the design process of modern wireless networks. These new approaches to building end-to-end systems are often based on open interfaces that allow for vendor diversity and support greater innovation but introduce complexities that are quite difficult to analyze using traditional (theoretical and/or simulation based) approaches. These shortcomings are quite often addressed by the introduction of testbeds as platforms for both development and performance evaluation. This talk will briefly introduce innovative and leading-edge, academic and industry wireless testbeds in US and Europe and go into some details on urban wireless testbed being developed jointly by Rutgers, Columbia, and NYU. The COSMOS testbed is currently being deployed in West Harlem (New York City) as part of the NSF Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research (PAWR) program. Key testbed technologies including SDR base stations, mmWave radio, optical wavelength division switching, next-generation mobile core network and distributed edge cloud will be introduced. The talk will conclude with several suggestions for further research related to the next generation of the wireless system and testbeds.

Biography:
Ivan Seskar is the Chief Technologist and Director at WINLAB, Rutgers University responsible for experimental systems and prototyping projects. He is currently the program director for the COSMOS project responsible for the New York City NSF PAWR deployment, the PI for the NSF GENI Wireless project, which resulted in campus deployments of LTE/WiMAX base stations at several US universities, and the PI for the NSF CloudLab deployment at Rutgers. He has also been the co-PI and project manager for all three phases of the NSF-supported ORBIT mid-scale testbed project at WINLAB, successfully leading technology development and operations since the testbed was released as a community resource in 2005 and for which the team received the 2008 NSF Alexander Schwarzkopf Prize for Technological Innovation. Ivan is a co-chair of the IEEE Future Networks Testbed Working Group, a Senior Member of the IEEE, a member of ACM and the co-founder and CTO of Upside Wireless Inc.

6G and Beyond: The Future of Wireless Communications Systems

Abstract:
6G and beyond will fulfill the requirements of a fully connected world and provide ubiquitous wireless connectivity for all. Transformative solutions are expected to drive the surge for accommodating a rapidly growing number of intelligent devices and services. Major technological breakthroughs to achieve connectivity goals within 6G include: (i) a network operating at the THz band with much wider spectrum resources, (ii) intelligent communication environments that enable a wireless propagation environment with active signal transmission and reception, (iii) pervasive artificial intelligence, (iv) large-scale network automation, (v) an all-spectrum reconfigurable front-end for dynamic spectrum access, (vi) ambient backscatter communications for energy savings, (vii) the Internet of Space Things enabled by CubeSats and UAVs, and (viii) cell-free massive MIMO communication networks. In this talk, use cases for these enabling techniques as well as recent advancements on related topics are highlighted, and open problems with possible solutions are discussed, followed by a development timeline outlining the worldwide efforts in the realization of 6G. Going beyond 6G, promising early-stage technologies such as the Internet of NanoThings, the Internet of BioNanoThings, and quantum communications, which are expected to have a far-reaching impact on wireless communications, have also been discussed at length in this talk.
